Xylo-oligosaccharide powder, also known as XOS powder, is a functional polysaccharide of low molecular weight saccharides composed of 2-9 xylose molecules linked by β-1,4 glycosidic bonds, with xylobiose, xylotriose and xylotetrose as the main components.
xylo-oligosaccharides offer mild sweetness, low calories, excellent stability and low viscosity properties that make them a versatile food ingredient and additive. Xylo-oligosaccharides have 40-50% the sweetness of sucrose, giving them a mildly sweet taste. With limited metabolization by human digestive enzymes, xylo-oligosaccharides have a low caloric value of 8kJ/g according to national standards. An important benefit of xylo-oligosaccharides is their stability, as they can withstand high temperatures up to 120°C for 1 hour without degradation even in acidic conditions between pH 2.5-8.0. The low and rapidly decreasing viscosity with rising temperatures makes xylo-oligosaccharides suitable as an additive for high-temperature food processing where low viscosity is needed.
Xylo-oligosaccharide powder Specifications
The latest certificate of analysis shows that this batch of xylo-oligosaccharide (XOS) powder meets the quality specifications outlined in the GB/T35545-2017 national standard. The XOS powder has an appearance of a white powder with no visible impurities. The XOS content is 96.6% for polymerization degree of 2-7 and 73.5% for polymerization degree of 2-4, surpassing the minimum specifications of 95% and 65% respectively. The pH is within the required range at 5.1. Moisture content is 2.5%, below the limit of 5.0% maximum. Ash content is 0.01%, well below the 0.3% limit. Heavy metals including lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury are all below the maximum limits. Microbial testing shows total bacteria, coliforms, mold and yeast are within specifications and no pathogens were detected. Overall, this batch meets the quality specifications for xylo-oligosaccharide powder according to the GB/T35545-2017 national standard.
Xylo-oligosaccharide powder is produced from wheat straw, which acts as the raw material. The wheat straw goes through a steam explosion pre-treatment first. In this step, the wheat straw is treated with high pressure saturated steam, which causes the straw to undergo a rapid expansion once the pressure is reduced. This steam explosion process helps open up the structure of the wheat straw and make the cellulose and hemicellulose components more accessible. After steam explosion, the pre-treated wheat straw undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis using xylanase enzymes. Xylanase catalyzes the breakdown of xylan, which is a major component of hemicellulose, into xylo-oligosaccharides. The xylo-oligosaccharides are then concentrated and spray-dried to obtain the final xylo-oligosaccharide powder product. This two-step process takes wheat straw from the raw material to the production of high quality xylo-oligosaccharide powder through steam explosion pre-treatment followed by targeted enzymatic hydrolysis.
XOS2-7 content(As dry basis)is no less than 95% and the XOS2-4content(As dry basis)is no less than 65%
