Sorbitol can be produced by the catalytic hydrogenation of D-glucose and is available in the form of free-flowing crystal powder and water solutions. In China, sorbitol is primarily produced by either continuous or intermittent hydrogenation of refined glucose extracted from starch saccharification. This process involves adding a 53% glucose solution and 0.1% nickel catalyst to an autoclave, then displacing air and subjecting the mixture to medium pressure at 150℃ with pH 8.2-8.4. Sorbet liquid ion exchange resin purifies it for 5 minutes before passing off as product - however its yield remains relatively low (50%). A new direct hydrogenation method straight from processing starchy solutions increases yields up 85%, making production more cost effective without sacrificing efficiency or quality results.
